Yirenkyi's Stoppage-Time Winner Gives Ghana Dramatic World Cup Opener Victory Over Panama

Sports

Caleb Yirenkyi struck in the 95th minute to hand Ghana a precious 1-0 victory over Panama in their FIFA World Cup 2026 Group L opener in Toronto on Wednesday, a result that gives the Black Stars an early advantage in what promises to be a fiercely contested pool.

The substitute’s composed finish — turning home a cross from fellow replacement Brandon Thomas-Asante deep into stoppage time — sparked delirious celebrations on the Ghana bench and sent the West African nation’s travelling supporters into raptures at the end of a match that had looked destined for a goalless draw.

Panama Dominant Early, Ghana Struggle

For much of the opening 45 minutes, it was Panama who looked the more likely scorers. The Central Americans pressed Ghana high up the pitch and fashioned several clear opportunities, only to find goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi in resolute form. The shot-stopper produced a string of important saves to keep the scores level, but his evening ended prematurely when he sustained an injury that forced him off at half-time.

Ati-Zigi’s departure threatened to unsettle Ghana, who had already been second-best for large stretches of the first half. Coach Carlos Queiroz, the experienced Portuguese tactician brought in to guide the Black Stars through the tournament, was forced into a tactical reshuffle during the interval.

Ghana Grow Into the Game

The second half told a different story. Ghana emerged with greater urgency and composure, gradually wresting control of midfield and pushing Panama onto the back foot. Jonas Adjetey went close with an effort that tested the Panamanian goalkeeper, while Jordan Ayew — the veteran forward carrying much of his nation’s attacking burden — saw a dangerous header drift just wide.

As the clock ticked past 90 minutes and four minutes of added time were signalled, the match appeared set to end in stalemate. Then came the decisive moment. Thomas-Asante, introduced as a second-half substitute, surged down the left flank and delivered a low, driven cross into the six-yard box. Yirenkyi, arriving at the near post, got there ahead of his marker and steered the ball past the goalkeeper to seal all three points.

Group L Takes Shape

The victory places Ghana second in Group L on three points, behind England on goal difference after the Three Lions also won their opening fixture. Panama sit bottom with no points, alongside Croatia, and face an uphill battle to progress to the knockout rounds.

Ghana’s next assignment is a daunting one: a clash with England on June 23, followed by a meeting with Croatia four days later. The Black Stars will take confidence not only from the result but from the manner of their second-half recovery, which showed a resilience and tactical adaptability that bodes well for the challenges ahead.

The win also vindicates the decision to entrust Queiroz with the coaching reins. The 73-year-old, who has managed at five previous World Cups with Iran, Egypt and Portugal, has spoken publicly about his belief that Ghana possess the talent to compete with any team in the tournament. Wednesday’s result — however nervy — offered the first tangible evidence to support that claim.

For Yirenkyi, the goal represents the kind of moment that can define a career on the world stage. For Ghana, it represents something perhaps more important: proof that this squad has the character to fight until the final whistle.

The Black Stars’ opening-day drama will add to the excitement building around the tournament in Ghana, where fans have been gathering for official watch parties and fan experiences organised as part of the broader World Cup campaign.
