Ivory Coast Forward Wahi Cleared to Enter Canada After Visa Hurdle Over Spot-Fixing Investigation

General

Ivory Coast international Elye Wahi has been granted permission to enter Canada and join his national team for the FIFA World Cup 2026, following a weeks-long visa dispute linked to his arrest in a French spot-fixing investigation.

The Ivorian Football Federation confirmed on Wednesday that Canadian immigration authorities had issued a temporary resident permit to the 23-year-old Nice forward, clearing the way for him to participate in the tournament. “The necessary authorisations for his entry into Canadian territory have now been obtained,” the federation said in a statement.

Wahi was arrested in May 2026 as part of a broader investigation by the Marseille prosecutor’s office into organised fraud, sports corruption, handling of proceeds of crime, and money laundering. The probe centres on allegations that he deliberately earned a yellow card during a Ligue 1 match between Nice and Metz — an act known as spot-fixing. He was released after being interviewed in police custody, and the investigation remains ongoing.

The visa complication arose because Canadian immigration officials requested additional information about Wahi’s legal situation before processing his entry. Canada’s Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Commission emphasised that hosting a major sporting event does not alter the country’s immigration laws. However, the agency noted that “in exceptional circumstances, temporary resident permits may be granted to a person who is inadmissible or does not meet the requirements to enter or remain temporarily in Canada.”’

The case has drawn comparisons to that of Ghana midfielder Thomas Partey, who was denied entry to Canada for the World Cup due to ongoing criminal proceedings in the United Kingdom. Partey, who faces rape and sexual assault charges, reportedly misrepresented his arrest history to Canadian officials, and his appeal was rejected by a federal court in Ottawa. He consequently missed Ghana’s opening match against Panama.

On-Field Drama Amid Off-Field Turmoil

Wahi’s disciplinary record in Ligue 1 added another layer of complexity to his season. The yellow card that sparked the spot-fixing investigation was his fifth league booking of the campaign, automatically triggering a suspension for the first leg of Nice’s relegation play-off against Saint-Étienne. The match ended 0-0 without him.

He returned for the decisive second leg and delivered a match-winning performance, scoring twice in a commanding 4-1 victory that preserved Nice’s top-flight status. That display of composure under pressure underscored why Ivory Coast’s coaching staff were so eager to have him available for the World Cup.

The Elephants now face a demanding Group E schedule. They open against Germany in Toronto on Saturday before travelling to Philadelphia to face Curaçao the following Thursday. Wahi’s availability provides a significant boost to their attacking options as they seek to navigate a competitive group.

A Broader Question for the Tournament

Wahi’s case raises uncomfortable questions about the intersection of criminal investigations and international sporting competition. While he has not been convicted of any offence, the seriousness of the allegations — which include corruption and money laundering — sits uneasily alongside the privilege of representing one’s country on the world’s biggest stage.

Canada’s willingness to grant exceptional entry to a player under active investigation, while simultaneously denying entry to another on similar grounds, highlights the discretionary nature of immigration decisions. The distinction appears to rest on the specifics of each case, but it leaves room for inconsistency that could affect future tournaments hosted in countries with strict entry requirements.

For now, Ivory Coast will be relieved to have their forward available. The spotlight shifts from the visa office to the pitch, where Wahi will be expected to justify the effort invested in securing his participation.
