Rhode Island Pledges Full Hospitality to Black Stars for World Cup Campaign

A vibrant flag-raising ceremony in Providence, Rhode Island, has marked the official welcome of Ghana’s national football team to the United States as the 2026 FIFA World Cup gets underway, with state officials pledging comprehensive hospitality throughout the tournament.

The event brought together senior government officials from Rhode Island, representatives of the Ghana Football Association, members of the Ghanaian diaspora, and dignitaries from both countries, underscoring the cultural and diplomatic ties that have made the small New England state a home away from home for the Black Stars.

Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States, Emmanuel Victor Smith, delivered a stirring message of national pride as he welcomed the team to their World Cup base. “Today they carry with them the hopes, prayers and aspirations of our entire nation,” Ambassador Smith said. “They wear not merely a football jersey; they wear the colours, pride and identity of Ghana.”

The ambassador reminded the players that their presence on the global stage extends well beyond football. “Every pass, every tackle, every goal and every act of sportsmanship will reflect the character and the spirit of our nation,” he said, urging them to represent not only Ghana but the entire African continent. “Millions across Africa will be cheering you on and looking to you as ambassadors of African excellence, resilience and talent.”

Rhode Island Governor Daniel McKee expressed excitement at hosting the Ghanaian team at Bryant University during the tournament, describing the flag-raising as emblematic of what the World Cup represents. “Today’s flag-raising represents what this tournament is all about — bringing people together,” he said, praising the role of sport in fostering global understanding and friendship.

The Governor encouraged visitors to experience Rhode Island’s attractions and hospitality, assuring the Ghanaian delegation that they would feel at home throughout their stay. He reminded residents that people of all walks of life, countries and backgrounds will be able to meet, watch matches together, celebrate together and learn from one another over the next five weeks.

Rhode Island Treasurer James Diossa described Ghana’s selection of the state as a base camp as a proud moment. “When we got the word in early January that Ghana selected Rhode Island, we felt like we had won the World Cup,” he remarked, noting that state officials had spent months preparing for the team’s arrival.

The welcome reflects the growing significance of the Be Active campaign that Ghana’s World Cup stars launched earlier this week, connecting with local youth on the training grounds of Bryant University. That initiative demonstrated the Black Stars’ commitment to leaving a lasting legacy beyond match results.

Ghana arrives at this World Cup carrying two decades of unfinished business since Asamoah Gyan’s historic goal against the Czech Republic in 2006. The weight of expectation is immense, but the warm reception in Rhode Island suggests the team will have every support it needs to perform on the global stage.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Embassy in the United States will establish consular pop-up stations in Boston and Philadelphia and coordinate closely with local authorities to ensure the safety and wellbeing of Ghanaian fans travelling to support the team.
