Marcel Desailly Tips Semenyo as Ghana's Key to World Cup Success

Sports

Former France international Marcel Desailly has identified Antoine Semenyo as the player who could define Ghana’s campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, urging the Manchester City forward to bring both his talent and his humility to a Black Stars side hungry for international success.

Semenyo arrives at the tournament riding the crest of an extraordinary season. After joining Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in January, the 26-year-old helped the club secure both the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup, finishing the 2025/26 campaign with a combined 21 goals across his time at Bournemouth and City. It is the kind of form that has made him one of the most talked-about Ghanaian players in world football.

But Desailly, who won the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000 with France, believes Semenyo’s impact will depend as much on his mentality as his ability.

“He’s that individual player that when you are facing challenges, with one move, one run, he can allow Ghana to stay in the game,” Desailly told FlashScore.com. “So this is what we are expecting from him. Be disciplined. Don’t take advantage because you are a Manchester City player, you are a star, you are arriving in Ghana, and you are stronger than the entity and the team.”

The Weight of Expectation

Ghana’s qualification for the World Cup has generated enormous excitement, but it has also intensified the pressure on a squad that failed to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations. The gap between that disappointment and the global stage of the World Cup has left fans and players alike yearning for a statement performance.

Desailly acknowledged that dynamic, noting that Semenyo must navigate the tension between his individual brilliance and the collective needs of the team.

“He really needs to come in with humility and be that top player that can make the difference,” Desailly said. “The issue is he needs to stay disciplined even though he’s a Manchester City player, and he’s one of the stars. We need him to be one of the key players who can allow them, when they are in a difficult situation, to raise a little bit.”

A Second World Cup Chapter

This will be Semenyo’s second World Cup outing, having made his tournament debut at the 2022 edition in Qatar, where Ghana exited at the group stage. The experience of that campaign, combined with his growth at the highest level of club football, has positioned him as the undisputed talisman of this Black Stars generation.

The challenge for head coach Otto Addo will be building a system that maximises Semenyo’s explosive pace and clinical finishing while ensuring the team does not become overly reliant on a single player. Sports Minister Kofi Adams has already spoken about the collective spirit that he believes can carry the team further than individual talent alone.

That spirit will be tested from the opening match. Ghana’s group-stage opponents will present a stern examination, and the margin for error at a World Cup is razor-thin. Semenyo’s ability to produce moments of magic in tight, congested games could be the difference between progression and an early flight home.

Diaspora Support

The Black Stars will not lack for vocal backing. Thousands of Ghanaian diaspora supporters are expected to travel to North America for the tournament, creating an atmosphere that could energise the squad during its most demanding fixtures.

For Semenyo, the stage is set. A player who has conquered English football now has the opportunity to etch his name into Ghanaian sporting folklore. Whether he seizes that opportunity may well determine how far the Black Stars travel in this World Cup.
