Kwabeng Youth Say Chief Ignoring Galamsey Devastation

Local News

Angry youths in Kwabeng, the capital of Atiwa District, took to the streets on Thursday demanding immediate action against the rampant illegal mining – known locally as galamsey – that is destroying their lands, water sources and livelihoods.

The protesters allege that their chief has ignored multiple petitions, leaving the community without development and exposing farms and rivers to severe degradation.

“We lack development and the galamsey activities are excessive. Soon we may have nowhere to bury our loved ones because all our lands are being destroyed,” said Addo Dankwa Jnr., a youth leader, during an interview with Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem.

He warned that frustration is building among the youth and could spark unrest if the situation is not addressed swiftly.

According to Addo, the demonstrators are calling on the Inspector‑General of Police to intervene, halt an upcoming gathering planned by the chief, and ensure their grievances are heard.

The protest comes amid growing national outrage over galamsey’s impact on water bodies, farms and community safety across the Eastern Region.

Residents claim they have repeatedly petitioned the palace for change, yet the chiefs’ men “are still not listening,” the youth leader added, urging the IGP to step in and stop the chief from holding further gatherings.

Local authorities have not yet issued a formal response, but the Ghana Police Service is expected to monitor the situation closely to prevent escalation.

If the youths’ demands are not met, experts warn that further environmental damage and social unrest could spread to neighbouring districts.
