Universal Merchant Bank Signs Three-Year Deal to Become GFA Official Banking Partner

Universal Merchant Bank has signed a three-year partnership agreement with the Ghana Football Association, becoming the official banking partner of the governing body for football in the country. The deal, announced at UMB headquarters on Friday, May 29, extends well beyond the upcoming FIFA World Cup and covers all GFA activities over the next three years.

The partnership signals a deepening of corporate involvement in Ghanaian football at a time when the sport is preparing for its biggest global stage. The 2026 FIFA World Cup, to be held in the United States, Canada and Mexico, has drawn significant national attention, and the GFA has been working to secure financial backing to support its campaign.

“The duration for this partnership is three years, and it is not just for the World Cup,” said Edem Knight Tay, Head of Corporate Communication at UMB. “It is a partnership with the GFA, so all the activities of the GFA, UMB happens to be the official banking partners from now right through the next three years, and we are hoping that we will continue even after the third year.”

The scope of the agreement goes beyond traditional sponsorship. UMB will support the association across multiple dimensions, including the training of footballers, coaches and referees, as well as providing wealth management services. Knight Tay drew a parallel between the disciplines required in both sectors, noting that the bank sees football as a natural partner.

GFA Vice President Mark Addo welcomed the partnership, framing it as a vote of confidence in the association’s broader vision. “This partnership represents the belief in the GFA. It also represents the belief in the power of football to unite our nation,” he said. “From the Ghana Football Association, our vision is clear: to build a football ecosystem which is competitive, inclusive, sustainable and capable of producing success both on and off the field. This vision requires investment, partnership and institutions that are willing to support not just elite football but the entire football development pathway.”

The deal places UMB alongside a growing roster of corporate partners working with the GFA ahead of the World Cup. The bank, which recently received continental recognition for its digital banking and leadership transformation, is leveraging sports sponsorship to deepen its brand visibility in an increasingly competitive financial services market. The bank’s recent continental awards highlighted the institution’s broader strategic ambitions.

As part of the event, the GFA presented UMB with a signed Black Stars jersey and other souvenirs, a symbolic gesture that underscored the collaborative nature of the arrangement.

The partnership arrives at a pivotal moment for Ghanaian football. With the World Cup just weeks away, the GFA has been securing sponsorships and commercial agreements to fund its preparations and long-term development programmes. The association has faced scrutiny in the past over financial management, and deals of this nature are expected to bring both resources and a measure of accountability to the table.
