The Achimota Circuit Court will commence the trial of 21‑year‑old Sampson Azumah on December 17, after he was charged with stabbing firefighter Leslie Adjie Tetteh during a blaze at Adjiriganor.
On November 14, 2025, at about 2330 hours, a fire broke out at the residence of Yvonne Okoro in Adjiriganor. Firefighters, including Officer Tetteh, battled the blaze while a crowd of by‑standers gathered and, according to the court, pelted the crew with stones.
When the water hose was being folded after the fire was controlled, Azumah approached Officer Tetteh, accusing him of deliberately splashing water on him. He then drew a concealed screwdriver from his waist bag and stabbed the officer’s left arm before fleeing the scene.
Officer Tetteh was rushed to hospital for treatment and a medical report was filed with the East Legon Police. Azumah was arrested on November 17, admitted the offence and the weapon was recovered.
Azumah has been charged with causing harm and entered a plea of not guilty. During a case management conference on December 3, Chief Inspector Emmanuel Addo informed the court that three witness statements had been filed and served on the accused, who has no legal representation. The presiding judge ordered the registrar to ensure the statements are read and explained to Azumah before the next adjourned date.
“Three witness statements have been filed and served on the accused,” Chief Inspector Emmanuel Addo said.
Rashid Nisawu, Greater Accra Regional Chief Fire Officer, warned that the Service will continue attending court sittings and is determined to pursue the matter to its logical conclusion. He added that relaxing its stance could cause the public to take the Service for granted.
The trial, set for December 17, will determine whether Azumah will be convicted of assaulting a public officer, a case that underscores the risks faced by Ghana’s firefighters and the need for strict enforcement of the law.
