Four suspects arrested in Ashanti Region drug bust as police seize illicit substances and cash

In a significant blow to illegal drug trafficking in the Ashanti Region, Ghana Police Service apprehended four suspected drug peddlers and seized a locally manufactured pistol, various narcotic substances, and cash during an intelligence-led operation in Kunsu Township, Mankranso District.

The operation, conducted in the early hours of Friday, June 26, 2026, resulted in the arrest of Issaka Musah, 22, Amankwah Emmanuel, 25, Kwame Boateng, 32, and Appiah Prince, 23. Police recovered a locally manufactured pistol loaded with two BB rounds of ammunition, quantities of suspected tramadol, red capsules, dried leaves believed to be Indian hemp, a whitish powder suspected to be cocaine, and GH₵5,647.40 in cash, believed to be proceeds from the illicit drug trade.

Preliminary investigations indicate the suspects admitted ownership of the recovered items. They remain in police custody assisting with investigations and will be brought before court upon conclusion of the investigation.

The Ghana Police Service reiterated its commitment to combating drug-related offences and organised crime, urging the public to continue providing credible information to support efforts to identify and arrest criminals.

This operation follows a similar crackdown in Kumasi where police arrested 13 suspected drug peddlers and seized firearms and narcotics (/police-arrest-13-suspected-drug-peddlers-in-kumasi-anti-narcotics-crackdown). It also aligns with broader regional efforts to tackle organised crime, as evidenced by a recent operation that netted 186 suspects linked to human trafficking and organised crime in the Ashanti Region (/police-arrest-186-suspects-in-major-crackdown-on-human-trafficking-organised-crime-in-ashanti-region).

The seizure underscores the persistent challenge of illicit drug production and distribution in Ghana’s interior regions. Locally manufactured firearms, often crudely assembled, pose a significant threat to public safety when coupled with the narcotics trade. The presence of substances such as tramadol, Indian hemp, and cocaine highlights the diversity of the illegal drug market operating within the country.

Law enforcement officials note that intelligence-led operations, based on credible tips from the public, remain crucial in dismantling drug networks. The police continue to encourage community cooperation, emphasizing that timely information can prevent crimes and lead to successful interventions.

As the suspects await trial, the case highlights the ongoing efforts by Ghana’s security agencies to address the multifaceted problem of drug trafficking and illegal firearms. The operation serves as a reminder of the importance of sustained vigilance and collaborative approaches between law enforcement and communities to maintain safety and security.
