Tanyigbe Council Backs Togbega Kodi Adiko VI's Authority

Local News

The Tanyigbe Traditional Council has firmly reaffirmed the legitimacy of Togbega Kodi Adiko VI as the Paramount Chief of the Tanyigbe Traditional Area, located in the Ho Central Municipality of the Volta Region.

This move comes as a direct response to what the Council describes as increasing misinformation circulating in the media regarding the Chief’s status. In a press release issued on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, the Council emphasized the historical significance of the Kodi Stool, tracing its origins to Notsie during the Ewe people’s migration.

According to the Council, the Kodi Stool has held supreme traditional authority over Tanyigbe’s four divisions – Anyigbe, Etoe, Atidze, and Dzafe – for centuries. “Both oral tradition and documented historical records attest to an unbroken, non-rotational succession of six Paramount Chiefs from the Kodivi Royal Clan of the Adiko Royal Family,” the Council stated.

The Council detailed the line of succession, highlighting that Togbega Kodi Adiko VI follows Togbe Kodi Adiko I, Togbe Fiakpoe Adiko II, Togbe Apatsi Adiko III, Togbe Goto Kɔsi Adiko IV, and Togbe Kwasi Adiko V. This lineage, they argue, demonstrates a continuous and legitimate claim to the throne.

Addressing concerns about the enstoolment process, the Council asserted that Togbega Kodi Adiko VI was properly nominated, selected, confined, and enstooled after the passing of his predecessor, Togbe Kwasi Adiko V, adhering strictly to Tanyigbe and Ewe customary laws.

“His enstoolment was conducted with the full participation and endorsement of our kingmakers and Traditional Authority and included all required rites, including oath-swearing by the rightful persons, sacred rites, and public outdooring,” the statement explained.

While acknowledging a chieftaincy dispute before the National House of Chiefs – an appeal against a ruling by the Volta Regional House of Chiefs in March 2025 – the Council clarified the legal implications. “Under Section 34 of the Chieftaincy Act, 2008 (Act 759), the filing of an appeal automatically operates as a stay of execution of the Regional House of Chiefs’ decision,” the Council stated.

Therefore, the Council deemed claims of Togbega Kodi Adiko VI’s enstoolment being nullified as “legally unfounded and misleading.” “The Regional House of Chiefs’ ruling remains stayed, and Togbega Kodi Adiko VI continues to exercise full authority as Paramount Chief pending the final determination of the appeal,” the Council emphasized.

The chiefs, elders, and kingmakers from all four divisions have unanimously pledged their recognition and support for Togbega Kodi Adiko VI as the legitimate Paramount Chief.

The Council appealed for restraint and respect for the judicial process, urging all parties to avoid actions or statements that could disrupt peace and unity within the Traditional Area. They also encouraged community members, development partners, and state institutions to disregard misinformation and engage with the recognized Traditional Authority.

The Council concluded by noting the positive developments under Togbega Kodi Adiko VI’s leadership. “Tanyigbe has recorded steady gains in community development, education, youth empowerment, cultural preservation and peacebuilding,” the statement said.

The press release was signed by Mr. Isaac Tawiah Gbortsu, Secretary of the Tanyigbe Traditional Council.
