Ghana’s Sports and Recreation Minister, Kofi Adams, is calling on the 2026 World Cup host nations – the USA, Mexico, and Canada – to ease visa requirements for travelling fans.
The tournament, an expanded 48-nation competition, kicks off on June 11th. However, Minister Adams argues that the current visa application process, which often demands proof of substantial social and economic ties like property ownership, marital status, and significant bank statements, may exclude many passionate football supporters.
According to the Member of Parliament for the Buem Constituency, the stringent requirements pose a challenge for “the ordinary supporter.” He questioned, “I may be a sports fan and may not have any tie to anybody [no marriage, no kids], does that mean I shouldn’t go and watch the World Cup?”
Minister Adams further stated, “America believes in recreation and the rights of persons, so you cannot continue to put so much restriction on people who want to go and watch the World Cup.” He believes a more accommodating approach is necessary, adding, “Certain things must be relaxed because of the World Cup.”
The Black Stars are scheduled to begin their campaign against Panama on Wednesday, June 17th, followed by matches against England on June 23rd and Croatia on June 27th. The Minister’s plea comes as Ghana prepares to participate in the global football fiesta and aims to ensure its supporters can join in the excitement.
