Six students of Offinso Technical Institute in the Ashanti Region have been hospitalised following a violent confrontation between students and a group of suspected youth from a nearby Zongo community on Wednesday, May 27.
The incident, which occurred just hours after Eid prayers in the town, left the injured students receiving treatment at St. Patrick Hospital at Offinso Maase. A teacher at the school, speaking on condition of anonymity, attributed the clash to a longstanding feud that had been simmering between both groups for some time before finally erupting into open violence.
The attackers did not limit their aggression to students. According to the teacher, the group also vandalised property across the school campus, destroying glass windows, doors, and other fixtures in both the boys’ and girls’ dormitories as well as the house master’s residence. Several students fled the campus during the chaos and could not be immediately accounted for.
The school has since filed an official complaint with the police, and management along with Zongo community leaders have entered discussions aimed at restoring calm and preventing further escalation.
The Offinso incident underscores a recurring challenge across Ghana’s educational institutions, where tensions between student populations and surrounding communities occasionally spiral into violence. The timing of the clash — falling on Eid, a day of celebration — adds a particularly troubling dimension, raising questions about what role, if any, communal sentiments may have played in fuelling the confrontation.
School authorities and local leaders have a narrow window to address the underlying grievances before they resurface. The destruction of dormitory property means that students who were not directly involved in the fighting now face disrupted living conditions, compounding the disruption to their education.
Community leaders on both sides have reportedly committed to dialogue, but residents are calling for concrete measures beyond verbal assurances. The police investigation will need to determine not only who initiated the violence but also whether the attack was premeditated, given the teacher’s account of a pre-existing feud.
In the meantime, the hospitalised students continue to receive treatment, and the school faces the immediate challenge of restoring a sense of safety on campus. The incident serves as a stark reminder that community-school relations require constant nurturing, and that unresolved grievances can erupt with devastating speed when left to fester.
