Crystal Palace Win Conference League With Superb Victory Over Rayo Vallecano

Sports

Jean-Philippe Mateta fired Crystal Palace to their first European trophy as the Eagles edged out Rayo Vallecano in the Conference League final at the Red Bull Arena in Leipzig, capping a remarkable era under outgoing manager Oliver Glasner.

The France striker turned home a close-range winner on the rebound from an Adam Wharton strike early in the second half, securing a 1-0 victory that delivers Palace’s second major piece of silverware in consecutive seasons following last year’s FA Cup triumph over Manchester City. It was Mateta’s 16th goal of a season that has seen the striker’s career transformed under Glasner’s tutelage.

Both clubs were competing in their first European final, and the opening exchanges reflected the occasion’s weight. A cagey first half produced few clear-cut chances, with Alemao dragging a half-decent opportunity wide and Unai Lopez placing an effort past the post for the Spanish side. Palace’s best opening came just before the break, when Tyrick Mitchell headed wide after Wharton had delivered a superb ball into the box.

The match turned decisively six minutes into the second half. Wharton’s strike was palmed into Mateta’s path by Rayo goalkeeper Augusto Batalla, and the Frenchman diverted it into the net. It was a goal born of persistence and instinct — qualities that have defined Mateta’s resurgence at Selhurst Park.

The striker had almost left the club in January, with a knee injury scuppering a proposed move to AC Milan. That misfortune has proven a blessing for Palace. Mateta has now scored 46 goals in 110 matches under Glasner, compared to just 11 in 80 games before the Austrian’s arrival in February 2024. He has also earned a place in France’s World Cup squad, vindicating his decision to stay and fight for his place.

Wharton, too, deserves enormous credit. His driving run and shot created the winner, but his composure in possession throughout the match was outstanding — a performance made all the more impressive by the disappointment of missing out on England’s World Cup squad just a week earlier.

Yeremy Pino threatened to extend Palace’s lead, hitting both posts with a free-kick before teeing up Mateta for another chance that Batalla saved well. Rayo, who operate on the lowest budget in La Liga, struggled to create meaningful opportunities in the closing stages as Palace defended their lead with composure.

For Glasner, it is a fitting farewell. The Austrian departs having led Palace to the FA Cup, Community Shield, and now the Conference League in a transformative two-and-a-half-year spell. His achievement is all the more remarkable given the departures of Eberechi Eze to Arsenal and Marc Guehi to Manchester City during his tenure.

The victory also guarantees Europa League football for Palace next season, turning what had been a turbulent campaign — marked by a shock FA Cup exit to non-league Macclesfield, a 15th-place Premier League finish, and an enforced drop from the Europa League due to ownership issues — into one that will be remembered for its glorious conclusion. Palace are the second English club to win a European trophy this season, joining Europa League champions Aston Villa.
