The Otumfefu Osei Tutu II Foundation and Newmont have inaugurated the Otumfefu Newmont AI for Youth Centre in Sankore, the fourth Smart Lab in a six‑lab rollout across Ghana.
The centre, fully funded by Newmont and installed by Coral Reef Innovation Africa (CRIA), brings cutting‑edge AI, robotics and coding facilities to a community that previously had limited digital access.
Designed to give students hands‑on training in artificial intelligence, robotics, digital creativity and STEM problem‑solving, the lab aims to level the educational playing field for children in underserved districts.
The launch follows notable successes at the AI for Youth Centres in Wioso and Kona, where learners placed fifth in the 2024 Ghana Robotics Competition and claimed the national title in 2025 respectively, demonstrating the impact of the Smart Lab model.
“These results show that brilliance exists everywhere. When we level the playing field, Ghana’s children from Wioso to Kona, and now Sankore rise to meet the challenge,” said Joseph Danso, Social Performance Director, Newmont.
The Sankore centre is equipped with AI and robotics training systems, digital‑literacy workstations, hands‑on STEM kits, teacher‑training modules and an inclusive learning environment.
“Today’s event is more than a celebration of infrastructure; it is a symbol of possibility and empowerment,” noted Elaine Oppong‑Peprah, Administrator of the Otumfefu Foundation.
“This project is an investment in human potential. The youth of Sankore deserve access to the same opportunities as any child in Accra, New York or London,” added Joseph Danso, emphasizing Newmont’s long‑term commitment.
Newmont has pledged over GH₵1.7 million to establish six Smart Labs under a memorandum of understanding with the Otumfefu Foundation.
CRIA continues to train teachers and mentor students across all labs. “Our mission is simple: ‘Empower Tomorrow Today.’ With each new centre, we are building ecosystems where children can learn, create, compete and lead,” said Audrey‑Bertha Nartey, Country Lead, CRIA.
The Sankore AI for Youth Centre marks the next chapter in Ghana’s drive to nurture innovation beyond metropolitan areas, positioning rural learners to contribute to the nation’s digital future.
