Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin, the Okyehene of Okyeman, has ruled that Alhaji Sanusi Mohammed will be installed as the new chief of the Kyebi Zongo, urging all parties to give peace a chance.
The decision follows months of hearings at the Customary Tribunal of the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council after six Zongo indigenes, including the late chief’s son, challenged the selection of Alhaji Sanusi.
In his ruling, the Okyehene noted that the Hausa people, as the first settlers of the Zongo community, are the only eligible group to ascend the Zongo stool, and that eligibility is determined by the elders based on suitability rather than strict matrilineal or patrilineal lines.
He added, \”Alhaji Sanusi Mohammed has distinguished himself over the years, is a Kyebi‑born Hausa man with the requisite knowledge and pedigree, and therefore deserves the honour,\” the Okyehene said.
Alhaji Sanusi, a Physics teacher at Abuakwa State College and former second‑in‑command to the late chief, also serves as the NDC Chairman for the Abuakwa South Constituency.
When asked about the dispute, Alhaji Sanusi expressed gratitude, stating, \”I thank the Okyehene for his confidence in me. I pledge to uphold peace, harmony and development in the Zongo community and to bring honour to Okyeman.\”
The Okyehene has instructed the kingmakers to carry out all necessary rites so that Alhaji Sanusi can assume the presidency of the Akyem Abuakwa Council of Zongo Chiefs and become a member of the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council.
Stakeholders say the ruling should quell tensions and restore security in the Zongo area, though they note that continued dialogue will be essential to sustain peace.
