Ntim Fordjour Slams Government Over Election Spending

Politics

Accra – The Ranking Member on the Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, has vehemently criticised the government’s spending priorities, citing what he describes as a contradiction between funding by-elections and failing to resource critical national security agencies.

In a statement released on Friday, December 12, Rev. Fordjour questioned the rationale behind allocating substantial funds to electoral activities while the Ghana Immigration Service receives no capital expenditure in the 2026 Budget.

He specifically highlighted the costs associated with recent by-elections, stating, “The state spent GH¢38.6 million in a single day on the Akwatia by-election and GH¢1 million on a rerun of a few polling stations in Ablekuma,” adding that these expenditures were “unjustifiable.”

Rev. Fordjour further expressed concern over the impending rerun in Kpandai, arguing that “the administration is bent on blowing more millions in a needless rerun in Kpandai where a legitimately elected MP is alive.” He believes such decisions are detrimental to prudent public financial management.

The MP also took issue with the government’s reliance on international aid for security equipment, contrasting it with the significant spending on by-elections. “It is shameful this same government goes begging for GH¢1.77 million worth of equipment from Germany,” he wrote, questioning why the state would “waste millions on by-elections and reruns and go begging to retool your security sector”.

According to Rev. Fordjour, the government’s actions raise serious questions about its priorities. He urged a re-evaluation of spending choices, emphasising that investment in national security institutions like the Ghana Immigration Service should be prioritised over what he termed “avoidable and needless electoral expenditures.”

The Ranking Member’s comments are likely to fuel further debate regarding the allocation of national resources, particularly as the country prepares for future elections and faces ongoing security challenges.
