Black Stars Fans Face Nightmare Costs for 2026 World Cup, Sports Minister Reveals

Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams has described the logistical and financial burden of sending Ghanaian supporters to the 2026 FIFA World Cup as a nightmare, revealing that the government has already secured 1,000 tickets through early advance sales to avoid crippling costs.

The tournament, jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, presents unprecedented challenges for Ghanaian fan mobilisation. The vast distances between host cities, combined with soaring ticket prices and the complexity of coordinating travel across three countries, have made planning far more demanding than in previous World Cup editions.

Speaking on Citi FM on Monday, Mr Adams said Ghana’s absence from the 1994 World Cup held in the United States means the country has no prior experience managing supporter logistics for a North American tournament. “It is really nightmarish and a difficult one. This is the first time we are trying that. For us as a country, this is the first time we are playing a World Cup in that zone,” he said.

The government moved early to acquire tickets through FIFA’s advance sales arrangements before prices rose significantly, a strategy Mr Adams credited with averting a far worse situation. “Luckily for us, we managed and planned very well and effectively. We ordered 1,000. I believe that that is what has saved the situation because if we were waiting till now, it would have cost us huge sums of money to even get that number of tickets,” he explained.

The 1,000 tickets secured by the government do not represent the total allocation available to Ghanaians. The Ghana Football Association and other organisations have also obtained tickets and are working on sponsorship arrangements to help supporters travel to the tournament. Mr Adams emphasised that the combined efforts should ensure a meaningful Ghanaian presence at the competition.

The disclosure comes as Coach Carlos Queiroz has already named his final 26-man squad for the tournament, and the Black Stars are deep into their preparatory phase. With Ghana drawn in a competitive group, the question of whether enough fans will be able to attend to provide vocal support has become a matter of national sporting pride.

For many ordinary Ghanaians, the cost of flights, accommodation, and match tickets across multiple cities in the US and Canada may prove prohibitive, raising concerns that the stands could be dominated by neutral spectators rather than the passionate travelling support that has characterised Ghana’s previous World Cup campaigns.
