Ghana’s kidney disease patients received vital education on transplantation, nutrition, and mental health at a workshop organized by Nexus Global Services in partnership with the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital’s Urology and Nephrology Centre of Excellence.
The 2026 Kidney Patients Workshop, held on July 4, aimed to equip patients, families, and caregivers with comprehensive knowledge about chronic kidney disease, hemodialysis, kidney transplantation, renal nutrition, and psychological support. Held under the theme “The Road to Kidney Transplantation: Empowering Patients Through Knowledge, Nutrition, and Holistic Care,” the event featured presentations by consultant nephrologist Dr. Mensah Amoah, transplant coordinator James McKeown Amoah, nutritionist Thelma Ofori, and psychologist Priscilla Kushiabu.
Dr. Rashid Alhassan, Chairman of Nexus Global Services, emphasized the importance of patient education, stating, “Knowledge empowers patients to make informed decisions about their health. Through this workshop, we aim to provide reliable information, address common concerns, and inspire hope for patients and families navigating the challenges of kidney disease.”
This initiative builds on earlier efforts such as the recent donation of dialysis machines by Ghana Medical Help (GH¢7.5 million lifeline: Ghana Medical Help donates 17 dialysis machines, urges end to geographical barriers and voluntourism) and aligns with reports indicating that nearly one in five Ghanaians may be living with chronic kidney disease (Nearly one in five Ghanaians may be living with chronic kidney disease as cases surge nationwide).
The workshop comes amid growing concern over the burden of kidney disease in Ghana, with health experts warning that chronic kidney disease is becoming increasingly common, often diagnosed only after progression to advanced stages requiring dialysis or transplantation. Participants received information on the transplant process, post-operative care, dietary management, and coping strategies, alongside an interactive question-and-answer session with healthcare professionals.
Organizers emphasized that the initiative forms part of broader efforts to improve patient education, encourage early intervention, and strengthen multidisciplinary support for people living with kidney disease. By addressing both the medical and psychosocial aspects of kidney health, such programs aim to improve long-term outcomes and quality of life for affected individuals.
Nexus Global Services says it will continue to work with healthcare institutions to improve access to specialized treatment and support services for patients in Ghana, particularly as the nation grapples with rising rates of non-communicable diseases.
