Kumasi is set to benefit from a new children’s hospital, with construction slated to begin in January 2026, the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has announced.
Metropolitan Chief Executive, Richard Ofori-Agyemang Boadi, revealed this at the commissioning of the Abiss Bus Terminal and Lodge in Adehyeman. He stated that preparatory work for the project is complete, and the government is finalizing land acquisition for the construction site.
Currently, Kumasi relies on only two pediatric facilities – the Kumasi Children’s Hospital at Adum-Pampaso and the Asokwa Children’s Hospital – to cater for the health needs of its growing population. This, Mr. Boadi explained, has created a significant gap in childcare services.
“To address this challenge, the President has directed the construction of a new hospital, specifically designed to cater to the health needs of children in Kumasi,” he said.
The new hospital is envisioned as part of a comprehensive development plan to enhance essential services in the Ashanti Regional capital. Mr. Boadi also acknowledged congestion as a major issue affecting the metropolis, linking it to a shortfall of adequate markets and lorry terminals.
He appealed to private investors to collaborate with the government in expanding the city’s infrastructure, noting, “In Kumasi, congestion is one of our biggest challenges. The city is overcrowded due to the inadequacy of lorry terminals and markets. Our government is committed to restoring Kumasi’s reputation as the ‘Garden City.’”
Abigail Aduako, CEO of Abiss Terminal and Lodge, supported the call for robust public-private partnerships, emphasizing the private sector’s crucial role in job creation.
“The government alone cannot reduce unemployment. We need stronger support for individuals creating jobs for the youth,” she stated, adding a plea for greater security measures to protect private investments, particularly with the planned rollout of the 24-hour economy.
Ms. Aduako urged authorities to prioritize the safety and security of private sector operations, enabling them to contribute more effectively to economic growth and employment.
