The Minority in Parliament has demanded an explanation from the government regarding the GH₵10 million worth of relief items donated to Jamaica, Cuba, and Sudan. Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin raised concerns about transparency in the procurement process.
The aid package, intended for victims of a recent hurricane and those impacted by the conflict in Sudan, includes items such as bags of rice, mattresses, gari mix, cocoa products, and storage tanks. However, the Minority argues that the government should prioritize assisting Ghanaians affected by recent disasters.
Speaking in Parliament on Wednesday, December 17th, Mr. Afenyo-Markin stated, “The Foreign Affairs Committee of this House was not consulted in any manner. All we hear is that relief is being provided, but the process of procurement remains unclear.”
He further emphasized the irony of providing aid abroad while NADMO struggles with shortages domestically. “In this country, we face serious disasters, such as the recent flooding, where citizens have appealed for assistance, yet NADMO has indicated a lack of stock. We need transparency on this,” he said.
The Minority is calling for Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa to appear before the House to provide a detailed briefing on the donations and outline the procedures followed in their allocation.
