Man swims with horse through floodwaters as another rescues goat in Adabraka

Environment

Heavy rains that began on Sunday night and continued into Monday morning have inundated large parts of Accra, causing severe flooding that has submerged homes, roads and businesses.

In Adabraka, a suburb of the Ghanaian capital, residents were seen taking desperate measures to save their livestock as floodwaters rose. Dramatic video footage shows one individual swimming alongside his horse in a bid to reach safety, while another braved the chest-high waters to rescue a trapped goat.

The scenes, which quickly circulated on social media, highlight the human toll of the flooding that has disrupted the Monday morning rush hour and rendered many roads impassable.

The flooding has also affected other communities including Alajo, Avenor, Circle, Dzorwulu, Weija and Kasoa, with the Interior Minister urging Accra residents to work from home as a critical safety measure (Interior Minister urges Accra residents to work from home as flooding intensifies).

Emergency response agencies, including the Ghana Police Service, Ghana National Fire Service, Ghana Armed Forces and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), have been deployed to monitor the situation, assist affected persons and undertake rescue operations.

The Ministry of the Interior has issued a public safety advisory urging residents to remain where they are, avoid flooded roads and report emergencies. Residents in flood-prone communities have been advised to move to higher ground where it is safe to do so.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Meteorological Agency has forecast that rain-bearing clouds currently affecting southeastern parts of the country will persist, producing rain with occasional thunder, and spread westward into the evening. Northern Ghana will also experience thunderstorms from late afternoon into the evening.

This incident underscores the growing vulnerability of coastal cities to extreme weather events and the urgent need for improved drainage and disaster preparedness infrastructure (Heavy overnight rains trigger massive gridlock across Accra).
