President John Mahama has reaffirmed his commitment to affordable housing as a key component of his government’s ‘reset agenda’, stating that access to decent housing is a fundamental human right for all Ghanaians.
The President made these remarks on Wednesday, December 17, in Ho during a sod-cutting ceremony for the Oxygen City project – a smart city development slated for construction near the Ho airport, under the guidance of the Tema Development Corporation (TDC).
“Housing is one of the clearest measures of a society’s progress. A safe, decent home is not a privilege for a few but a fundamental human requirement for human dignity, economic productivity, social stability and national cohesion,” Mr. Mahama stated. He emphasized that his administration views housing delivery as a core social responsibility of the state.
Acknowledging the significant housing deficit facing the nation, the President indicated that addressing this challenge requires deliberate and sustained policy interventions. “Under this agenda, we are fundamentally rethinking how Ghana plans, builds…,” he added.
The Oxygen City project, according to the President, is part of a larger strategy to expand access to affordable housing, promote well-planned urban development, and ultimately improve the living standards of Ghanaians nationwide.
“Development must not remain concentrated in a few enclaves. Our national objective is clear: growth must be regional, it must be equitable, and it must be purposeful,” he explained.
The project is anticipated to integrate modern infrastructure with innovative smart planning concepts, fostering job creation and stimulating economic activity while tackling the country’s growing housing needs.
