President John Dramani Mahama praises Ghana’s strides in gender parity and looks to China’s model for further progress, saying both nations have advanced women’s rights across education, governance, science and technology.
In an exclusive interview with China Global Television Network (CGTN) marking sixty‑five years of Ghana‑China diplomatic ties, Mahama noted that basic and secondary school enrolments now show gender parity, a shift from earlier decades.
“We have gender parity when it comes to enrolment in school; many girls are going to school as boys,” Mahama said. He added that more Ghanaian women now occupy senior positions in public service and national governance.
He praised China’s record, referencing President Xi Jinping’s remarks at the Global Leaders Meeting on Women, where the word “development” was mentioned more than twenty times, signalling China’s view of women as central to national progress.
CGTN cited Chinese statistics indicating women constitute 43 percent of employment in high‑quality development sectors, 45.8 percent in science and technology roles, and nearly one‑third of the digital trade, e‑commerce and live‑streaming economy. Mahama described these figures as evidence of rapid, meaningful progress.
The discussion formed part of broader talks on the evolving Ghana‑China partnership, which covers trade expansion, industrialisation support, vocational training and China’s proposed Global Governance Initiative.
Mahama also recalled his recent meeting with President Xi, where both leaders explored a potential zero‑tariff agreement and deeper collaboration in industrial value‑addition.
As Ghana strengthens its female workforce and consolidates gains in education and leadership, Mahama said the country stands to benefit from China’s experience in integrating women into fast‑growing economic sectors.
He urged policymakers to translate the lessons into concrete programmes that will further boost women’s participation in science, technology and the digital economy, noting that sustained progress will enhance Ghana’s overall development trajectory.
