President John Mahama has directed the Ministry of Local Government to begin the process of upgrading Ho and Hohoe Municipalities to Metropolitan Assemblies. This move is part of a broader strategy to foster structured urban development nationwide.
The announcement was made by the President on Wednesday, December 17, during the groundbreaking ceremony for the Oxygen City housing project in Ho, Volta Region.
According to President Mahama, the upgrade is in recognition of the substantial growth experienced by both Ho and Hohoe, which now necessitates metropolitan status. “I have directed the Ministry of Local Government to put into process the arrangements to upgrade Ho into a Metropolitan Assembly. Ho and Hohoe have been identified. Hohoe is also going to be a Metropolitan Assembly,” he stated.
He further indicated that additional districts will also be elevated to municipal status, with details to be announced soon. “There are other districts that are going to be upgraded to municipal status, and it will be announced in due course,” the President assured, reiterating the government’s dedication to organised and sustainable urban expansion.
The upgrades are a key component of the government’s ‘Reset Agenda,’ aimed at establishing a conducive environment for transparent and orderly urban development.
President Mahama highlighted several measures the government will implement, including reforms to housing finance, improvements to land administration, promotion of public-private partnerships, and strategic infrastructure investments.
“Let me assure you that government remains firmly committed to creating the enabling environment that is necessary for planned, transparent, and sustainable urban development,” he added.
