Kwakye Ofosu Dismisses Mahama Third-Term Rumors as Absurd Fantasy

Government Communications Minister, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has firmly dismissed suggestions that President John Mahama intends to seek a third term in office, describing such claims as baseless.

The denial follows assertions made by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) alleging a hidden agenda by President Mahama to circumvent the constitutional two-term limit. The NPP pointed to social media activity from some National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters who have called on the President to remain in power.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s ‘Face to Face’ programme on Tuesday, December 9, Mr. Kwakye Ofosu stated, “The NPP have whipped themselves into needless frenzy. President Mahama has stated emphatically that he will respect the Ghanaian Constitution.

Because he’s a consummate democrat, there’s no third term anywhere for him or any other person as far as the constitution is concerned. Anyone can say what they want.

The fact that some people have gone on Facebook to say he should go for a third term doesn’t mean that will happen. The man himself has said he’s not interested.”

He implored the opposition party to cease what he deemed “needless speculation,” adding, “So NPP should stop wasting their time and everybody’s time, and purporting to be angry. It’s an absurd fantasy they’re getting themselves into. The President has not expressed any intent. Any talk about it is a complete waste of everybody’s time.”

President Mahama previously reiterated his commitment to the two-term limit on August 27, emphasizing that his non-participation in the 2028 elections would contribute to fiscal discipline and reduce excessive spending during election years, a pattern he believes fuels economic instability.

During a bilateral meeting with Singaporean President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, President Mahama also voiced criticism of incumbent governments’ tendency to disregard fiscal responsibility in pursuit of electoral gain.
