Barcelona secured a vital Champions League victory, overcoming Eintracht Frankfurt 2-1 at the iconic Nou Camp. Defender Jules Kounde emerged as the hero, scoring twice to turn the tide after Frankfurt took an early lead.
The German side stunned the home crowd in the 21st minute when Ansgar Knauff capitalized on a pass from Nathaniel Brown, skillfully maneuvering past Alejandro Balde to slot the ball past goalkeeper Joan Garcia.
However, Barcelona responded strongly after the break. Marcus Rashford, introduced as a substitute at halftime, proved instrumental, delivering a pinpoint cross that Kounde headed in to equalize in the 50th minute.
Just three minutes later, Kounde completed his brace, connecting with a delivery from Lamine Yamal while left unmarked six yards from goal, giving Barcelona the lead.
This win propels Barcelona to 10 points in their Champions League group, keeping their hopes alive for a direct spot in the last 16, avoiding the play-off round. They will travel to Slavia Prague on January 21st before hosting Copenhagen in their final group stage match.
Eintracht Frankfurt, currently seventh in the German Bundesliga, face an uphill battle for European qualification, sitting on just four points after six matches.
The match marked Barcelona’s fourth game back at the newly redeveloped Nou Camp, which reopened last month after a significant overhaul. The stadium, expected to be fully completed in 2027, is undergoing a modernization project to increase its capacity to 105,000.
After playing at the Estadi Olimpic for the past two seasons, Barcelona are relishing their return to their traditional home, having won all four matches played there since the reopening, albeit with a reduced capacity of 45,401.
“Playing in the Champions League at the Nou Camp was an amazing experience,” Rashford said after the match. “I’m enjoying it very much and looking forward to playing as much as I can. We’re in a position where it was important we got the points, so this is a good day.”
Rashford added, “The most important thing was to win, and I’m very happy we managed to do that. We played quite well and controlled the game. They scored at an unexpected time, but we reacted well and managed to get the goals without changing too much.”
Despite a recent heavy defeat to RB Leipzig domestically, Frankfurt showed early promise, but were unable to hold on against a determined Barcelona side. A late booking for Barcelona’s young forward, Lamine Yamal, means he will miss the trip to Prague due to suspension.
