Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) says security agencies are investigating a viral video that claims a group of Black American visitors were kidnapped and extorted by individuals they thought were police officers.
The authority released a statement on Monday, 8 December, signed by Bright Asempa Tsadidey, Director of Corporate Affairs, on behalf of the chief executive officer, confirming that the matter has been taken up by the relevant national security institutions.
According to the GTA, the Ghana Police Service and the Cyber Security Authority have already launched full investigations and are treating the incident with urgency. Both agencies have promised to update the public once the inquiries are concluded.
“We are working closely with the Ghana Police Service and the Cyber Security Authority to investigate the incident with utmost urgency,” said Bright Asempa Tsadidey.
Despite the concerns raised in the video, the GTA stresses that Ghana remains a safe destination, especially as thousands of visitors are expected for this year’s December events and festive celebrations.
The authority assures travellers that security systems, supported by national law‑enforcement and tourism‑sector partners, have been reinforced to guarantee safety, comfort and peace of mind throughout the festive season.
The public is urged to remain calm and allow the security agencies to complete their investigations.
Visitors seeking assistance can contact the Ghana Tourism Authority on 0579579019, 030 700 7100, or via WhatsApp at 0546352240.
GTA reaffirms that Ghana is open, secure and welcoming, and encourages all travellers to have full confidence in their safety.
