Gomoa West NDC Distances Itself from Captain Smart's Reported Parliamentary Bid

Politics

The Gomoa West Constituency Executive Committee of the National Democratic Congress has moved decisively to quash speculation that media personality Captain Smart is positioning himself to contest the party’s parliamentary primaries in the constituency, issuing a formal statement that raises fundamental questions about his membership status and political track record.

In a statement dated June 8, 2026, the Committee disclosed that it convened a meeting on Sunday, June 7, after media reports and public discussion suggested that Blessed Godsbrain Smart — widely known as Captain Smart — intends to seek the NDC’s parliamentary ticket for Gomoa West ahead of the 2028 General Elections. The Committee’s response was unequivocal.

“Mr Blessed Godsbrain Smart is not a legitimately registered member of the National Democratic Congress within the Gomoa West Constituency,” the statement declared, adding that the party’s official records contain no recognition of him as a registered member. The Committee further noted that Captain Smart has not participated in any branch meetings or party activities over the years, making it impossible to verify any formal association with the constituency branch.

The statement also took aim at what it characterised as a pattern of political inconsistency, noting that Captain Smart has publicly identified with both the Convention People’s Party and the New Patriotic Party at various points. While acknowledging every citizen’s right to choose their political affiliation, the Committee observed that “clarity and consistency in political identity remain important to maintaining the integrity of Party structures and processes.”

On the procedural question, the Committee offered a broader clarification: the NDC has not yet opened nominations for parliamentary primaries in any constituency nationwide. “Discussions relating to prospective candidacies remain premature,” the statement read, noting that the party’s current focus is on supporting the government of President John Dramani Mahama in delivering its mandate. The NDC has been navigating a range of governance and policy challenges that demand the party’s collective attention.

The episode highlights the complexities of political identity in Ghana’s competitive party landscape, where media figures and public personalities sometimes find their names floated in connection with political ambitions they may or may not harbour. Captain Smart’s profile as a broadcaster with a large following makes him the kind of figure whose name generates speculation, regardless of whether any formal political groundwork has been laid.

The Gomoa West NDC’s response also reflects the party’s sensitivity to the integrity of its internal processes. With the 2028 elections still on the horizon, the early management of potential candidacies — and the gatekeeping of membership requirements — serves as a signal to both members and aspirants that the party intends to enforce its rules rigorously.

The Committee urged members and supporters to remain disciplined and avoid speculation that could undermine party unity, reaffirming that the NDC remains “united, focused, and committed” to advancing its development agenda. It encouraged loyalty to party structures and collective efforts to strengthen the grassroots base ahead of future elections.

For Captain Smart, the public disavowal represents a notable setback in a political landscape where perception often precedes formal ambition. Whether the media personality will seek to formalise an NDC membership and pursue the Gomoa West seat through proper channels remains to be seen — but the constituency executive has made clear that, as things stand, the door is firmly closed.
