Ghana Card Required for Insurance from 2026

Politics

From January 1, 2026, Ghanaians seeking to purchase or renew their motor and other insurance policies will need to present their Ghana Card, the National Insurance Commission (NIC) has announced.

The NIC, in a notice sighted by JoyBusiness, stated that the Ghana Card will be a mandatory requirement for all insurance transactions.

According to the Commission, this directive applies to both individual and corporate clients. While individuals need the Ghana Card, corporate entities will be required to provide their Tax Identification Number (TIN) when dealing with motor insurance.

The NIC explained that the move is intended to bolster claims handling processes and strengthen Know Your Customer (KYC) and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) measures within the insurance sector. “This will help reduce fraud and bring our insurance industry in line with international financial standards,” the Commission believes.

This development mirrors similar requirements already in place by the Bank of Ghana, which mandates the use of the Ghana Card for banking transactions like deposits and withdrawals. It signals a broader push towards leveraging the national identification system for financial security and accountability.

Industry watchers suggest this could streamline verification processes and ultimately benefit consumers through more efficient service delivery. However, concerns remain about accessibility for those who may not yet have a Ghana Card.
