Firefighters Save Homes from Huge La Olympio Blaze

Firefighters averted a major disaster on Friday night, December 19, 2025, successfully containing a fierce blaze that threatened a densely populated area of La Olympio Abafum.

The fire erupted around 7:28 p.m., rapidly spreading through a cluster of wooden structures and generating substantial smoke, according to a release from the Ghana National Fire Service.

Despite the challenging terrain of narrow alleys and makeshift buildings, a coordinated multi-agency response prevented what officials feared could have been a devastating Christmas tragedy for dozens of families.

The first team, led by Assistant Divisional Officer I (ADO I) Matthew Y. Quaye, from the Trade Fair Fire Station arrived swiftly to find a fully developed fire. “We were faced with a very precarious situation,” ADO I Quaye stated, “but our team’s quick action and the support from other agencies were crucial.”

The vulnerability of settlements like Abafum, characterized by wooden structures, means fires can spread with alarming speed. The initial response was significantly strengthened by the arrival of two heavy-duty engines from the Military Fire Unit and the Parliament Fire Station.

The strategic deployment of resources demonstrated effective inter-agency collaboration. Simultaneously, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) acted decisively to cut power to the affected area.

This was a vital safety measure, as exposed electrical wires in such densely populated zones present a serious risk of electrocution to both residents and emergency personnel. Officers from the Ghana Police Service were also on the scene, managing the crowd and ensuring the safety of the fire crews.

The GNFS reported that four single rooms and their contents were destroyed, but several neighboring buildings were successfully saved. Remarkably, there were no casualties reported.

This successful intervention is particularly significant given a 33% increase in fire-related injuries across Ghana this year. GNFS leadership has lauded the efforts of Lima Wun, all supporting officers, and partner agencies for their professionalism and rapid response.

The swift action taken by all involved prevented a potentially catastrophic situation and offered a measure of relief as the Christmas season approaches.
