Fifi Kwetey Criticizes Majority Leadership Over OSP Bill

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has been cautioned by its General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, against the NDC Majority leadership in Parliament making significant decisions without prior consultation with the party.

Mr. Kwetey, the former Member of Parliament for Ketu South, warned that proceeding without such consultation could lead to public reversals of decisions by the President.

Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express on Wednesday, the General Secretary addressed the recent controversy surrounding a private member’s bill proposed by the Majority Leader and Chief Whip aimed at dissolving the Office of the Special Prosecutor.

“What I will say is that you heard what the President actually said, that they should withdraw it, so in that respect, what I will say is this, the majority leader, the chief whip, they are doing a great job so far,” he stated.

However, Mr. Kwetey emphasized that their positions do not grant them the authority to act unilaterally on sensitive policy matters.

“There’s a need for them to also appreciate that they are not an island. They’re operating as part of the party. So major decisions have to be made in consultation with the party,” he explained.

When directly asked if party leadership had been consulted before the bill’s introduction, he responded bluntly, “Clearly, we are not consulted.”

He further cautioned that such actions weaken internal coordination and unfairly pressure the President. “So the point I’m making is, don’t go do things that will force the president to come and say no. Work as an organ. Work together. So let the party be consulted on major decisions,” he added.

Mr. Kwetey revealed he had already addressed the issue privately with the leaders. “I’ve already said that on a private level, and I have told them, as for the public, that’s all I can say,” he noted.

Regarding the bill’s withdrawal being solely due to the President’s directive, he suggested it could have been avoided. “Naturally, it will be, but we don’t need to go through that in the future,” he said.

He specifically directed his caution towards the Majority Chief Whip. “And that goes especially to the chief whip. Sometimes he has a tendency to want to hasten things without proper consultation,” he added.
