13-Year-Old Boy Killed in Adelekezu Mining Violence

Local News

A 13-year-old boy, Pious Nkansah, also known as Nkrumah, has died after being shot at a mining site near Dadwen in the Axim District of the Western Region. The tragic incident occurred on Saturday, December 13, 2025, and sparked a violent reaction from some youth in the Adelekezu community, resulting in the destruction of company property.

Police responding to the scene discovered two 4×4 SUV vehicles and two tipper trucks completely burnt out. A pickup truck and a Toyota Land Cruiser also sustained damage. According to police reports, the destruction was carried out by some youth allegedly angered by the shooting.

Preliminary investigations suggest the incident stemmed from a confrontation between the youth and private security personnel employed by the mining company. It is alleged that the youth attempted to enter the mining concession, and during the ensuing struggle, tried to disarm a security guard of his pump-action gun. The guard reportedly fired in self-defense, hitting young Nkrumah.

The victim was swiftly transported to the Axim Government Hospital, but sadly, doctors pronounced him dead upon arrival. This news reportedly inflamed tensions, leading to the rampage and burning of assets.

The police managed to rescue eleven workers who were at risk of being attacked during the chaos. Five suspects have been apprehended and are currently assisting with the investigation. They are Gyenyame Owusu, 38; Matthew Asamah, 24; Nana Yaw, 15; Yaw Opoku, 16; and Kojo Agyei, 21. They face charges of causing harm and unlawful damage.

The Western Regional Police Command is appealing for calm and urging residents to cooperate fully with investigators as they work to establish the facts and ensure justice prevails. “We are committed to thorough and transparent investigations into this matter,” a police spokesperson stated, adding that patrols will be increased in the area. The investigations are currently ongoing.
