On Farmers’ Day, the Premier Tennis Club in Tema hosted a tennis competition as part of the year’s celebrations, drawing hundreds of tennis enthusiasts to cheer for their clubs.

The tournament, now in its sixth edition and largely sponsored by the KGL Foundation, saw teams from across the Greater Accra Region battle for the coveted title.

In the doubles final, Richard Frimpong Ansah and Sisu Tomegah of Sakumono Tennis Club defeated the host side 7‑1 to claim the championship.

“We’re very excited, we came in very confident knowing what we could do but we also respected our opponents and played with a free mind, and we came out with success,” said Richard Frimpong Ansah.

Sisu Tomegah, playing his first tournament for Sakumono, added, “I’m also very excited; this is my first time representing Sakumono Tennis Club and I’m happy to have made them proud. It was a very good game.”

Dr Michael Quashie, chairman of the Premier Tennis Club, explained, “Basically it’s a day to celebrate the farmers through sports and tennis, and we had teams from various tennis clubs compete amongst themselves, so it’s been a very good event.” He noted that organizers hope to expand the competition next year.

Other sponsors, including Imperial General Assurance, Bel Aqua, GNPC, SIR SAK World, Sky Water, CDH Financial Holdings, Ekuus Pharmacy, Pensions Alliance Trust and Raphal Medical Centre, also contributed to making the event possible.

The successful tournament underscores how sport can complement national celebrations, providing a lively platform for community interaction and showcasing local talent.
