Christian Council Praises Government's Pre-Christmas Sanitation Effort

The Christian Council of Ghana (CCG) has lauded the government’s decision to designate December 13 to 20 as National Sanitation Week, in anticipation of the upcoming Christmas celebrations.

The Council emphasized that caring for the environment is a fundamental religious obligation, highlighting the biblical concept of humankind as stewards of God’s creation. According to the CCG, a clean environment directly contributes to improved air quality, safer food sources, and potentially, longer lifespans.

In a statement released and signed by Rev. Dr. Cyril G.K. Fayose, the General Secretary of the Council, the CCG referenced the relaunch of the National Sanitation Day on Saturday, September 6, 2025, by President John Mahama. The relaunch occurred under the guidance of the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.

The National Sanitation Day, observed on the first Saturday of each month, is a key component of the broader ‘Clean Up Ghana’ agenda. This initiative aims to cultivate a sense of environmental responsibility and enhance public health through collaborative community efforts, the statement explained.

The Ministry extended this year’s December edition from a single day to a full week, recognizing the importance of a clean environment during the busy Christmas and Farmers’ Day periods. “This extension allows for a more comprehensive approach to sanitation across the country,” Rev. Dr. Fayose stated.

The Christian Council is actively encouraging all member churches, Local Councils of Churches (LCCs), and the general public to participate fully in the Sanitation Week activities nationwide. “The environment is a precious inheritance from our ancestors, and it is our collective responsibility to preserve it for future generations,” the Council added.

Zoomlion is expected to play a key role in supporting the sanitation efforts during the week.
