Chelsea's Champions League Hopes Dented by Atalanta Loss

Chelsea’s chances of automatic qualification for the Champions League knockout stages suffered a setback with a 2-1 defeat to Atalanta in Bergamo on Wednesday night.

Both teams entered the match level on 10 points, having each won three, drawn one, and lost one game in the league phase. A Joao Pedro goal gave Chelsea the lead in the first half, converting a cross from Reece James.

However, Atalanta proved a constant threat, particularly through the lively runs of former Premier League attacker Ademola Lookman. The Italian side equalized through Gianluca Scamacca, who headed home a cross in the second half.

Despite a late effort from Chelsea, including a strong shot from Alejandro Garnacho saved by the goalkeeper, Atalanta secured the win when Charles de Ketelaere was given too much space and fired a powerful shot past the Chelsea defence.

A late save from Atalanta’s Marco Carnesecchi denied Joao Pedro a potential equalizer. The result sees Chelsea drop to 11th place, outside the automatic qualification spots, with two league phase games remaining.

Atalanta, on the other hand, climb to third, establishing a three-point lead over Chelsea.

The defeat continues a worrying trend for Chelsea, who are now without a win in their last four matches across all competitions. Their last victory was a 3-0 triumph over Barcelona at the end of November.

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca made five changes to the starting lineup, continuing his policy of rotating the squad. “I think tonight in the first XI we had eight or nine players who played against Tottenham, Barcelona and Arsenal,” Maresca stated. “If you see the five changes that we did compared to Bournemouth, it is different, but it is the eight or nine players playing Barcelona. The ones who played tonight are the ones playing almost all the games.”

The Blues will be frustrated to have left Bergamo empty-handed after taking the lead, and the result places significant pressure on their remaining matches to secure a place in the knockout stages.
