Ghanaian innovator Bright Simons is gaining international prominence for his work shaping governance and development across Africa.
Simons, who the Financial Times once described as “frighteningly clever,” is best known as the founder of mPedigree, a platform utilizing mobile authentication to combat counterfeit medicines and goods. This successful merging of technology and public advocacy has established him as a key figure in the continent’s progress.
Beyond mPedigree, Simons has become a highly respected voice through rigorous, data-driven commentary on public policy. He’s known for challenging flawed proposals and offering alternative solutions, a practice that has garnered him a significant following on social media and within policy circles.
His academic background is as diverse as his professional pursuits. Simons has held fellowships at the Overseas Development Institute and Harvard University, initially building his foundation with an astrophysics research scholarship at Durham University.
Currently serving as an honorary vice-president of IMANI Centre for Policy and Education, a leading Ghanaian think tank, Simons continues to dissect policy failures and advocate for improved governance. “His insights are often brutally honest, but always aimed at fostering more effective outcomes,” a source within IMANI noted, speaking on condition of anonymity.
Recent accolades highlight his increasing international influence. In late 2024, he was appointed a Senior Visiting Fellow at ODI. More notably, in 2025, Simons was named co-chair of the World Economic Forum’s Global Development Council, a testament to his expanding role on the global stage.
Simons, still in his 40s, is widely anticipated to be a leading voice in African governance for years to come. His coinage of the term ‘katanomics’ – describing the disconnect between political rhetoric and sound policy – has already gained considerable traction within academic and policy analysis, and may prove to be a lasting contribution to the field.
