The Amedzofe Canopy Walkway in Ghana’s Volta Region has been temporarily closed after a pillar supporting the exit section failed on Wednesday.
The incident occurred at about three o’clock in the afternoon when a small exit pillar gave way, prompting immediate evacuation of visitors on the platform.
Management of the popular ecotourism site announced that the closure is a precautionary measure to safeguard tourists while a full investigation and structural assessment are carried out.
A joint team of local and international engineers has been deployed to examine the damaged pillar, evaluate the overall integrity of the walkway and recommend the remedial steps needed to restore safe operations.
“The walkway will remain closed until all safety requirements have been fully met and the structure is declared completely secure for public use,” management said in a statement.
The management expressed regret over the inconvenience and thanked tourists, tour operators and community partners for their patience and understanding.
“Your safety remains our highest priority,” the statement added.
Authorities expect the engineering assessment to be completed within the next few days, after which a public update on reopening timelines will be issued.
