Afenyo‑Markin: NDC Hawks Aim to Oust Independent Leaders

Politics

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo‑Markin says the NDC government is orchestrating a political purge, dismissing senior officials including the Chief Justice, Electoral Commission heads and the Special Prosecutor, in a move he calls retribution rather than renewal.

In a letter addressed to President John Dramani Mahama titled “One Year After: Ghana’s Democracy at a Crossroads”, the Effutu MP reflected on the wave of removals that have taken place since the December 7 2024 elections returned the NDC to power.

Mr Afenyo‑Markin noted that thousands of civil servants and parastatal employees were abruptly sent home without cause or due process, describing the episode as a “purge” that began with the dismissal of the Chief Justice and has now reached the top tiers of the Electoral Commission and the Office of the Special Prosecutor.

“This is not a reset; it is retribution. This is not legacy‑building; it is vendetta politics dressed in the language of renewal,” the Minority Leader wrote.

He added that the pattern points to a coordinated agenda driven by entrenched forces within the governing party rather than by the Presidency itself, stating, “Party hawks are evidently steering this agenda, clear as daylight.”

The letter further warned that a government preoccupied with targeting individuals instead of tackling national challenges betrays the trust of ordinary Ghanaians who elected it.

A government spokesperson declined comment on the accusations, urging the public to allow due process to run its course.

Analysts say the episode could deepen political polarization and undermine confidence in key democratic institutions if not addressed transparently.

As the nation marks one year since the election, the controversy raises questions about the true priorities of the current administration and its commitment to institutional strengthening.
