Essabella Adjoa Scott, an old girl of Wesley Girls High School – Cape Coast, has graduated as the Best Ghanaian student at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland, earning the Afetsi Awoonor Prize for her academic prowess in Data Science.
Ms Scott’s journey to this milestone was not without its challenges. After being denied entry into medical school for her undergraduate studies, she persevered through a bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, KNUST, graduating with a first-class honours.
She then had her national service at the Parasitology Department of the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research, before transitioning into a career in banking at UBA. However, it was her intentional leap into the big data field that led her to pursue an MSc in Data Science at the University of Aberdeen.
Despite facing financial constraints and imposter syndrome, Ms Scott proved her mettle, adjusting to a new academic system and coping with the cold climate. She noted that her experiences have taught her valuable lessons, including that setbacks do not end a story, but rather redirect it.
With a strong desire to apply data-driven thinking to create impact across industries and communities, Ms Scott is now gearing up for the next phase of her career. Her story serves as a testament to the power of resilience, determination, and faith in overcoming adversity.
