The Tanyigbe Traditional Council has been embroiled in a chieftaincy dispute, with the Volta Regional House of Chiefs nullifying the enstoolment of Roland Adiko as Paramount Chief of Tanyigbe.
The decision, delivered by the VRHC Judicial Committee on March 21, 2025, upheld the rotational system governing succession to the Tanyigbe Paramountcy, contrary to claims that it is the exclusive preserve of the Kodivi clan.
According to the Committee, historical records and documentary evidence establish that the Akotos of the Doku-Dzehe clan were not caretaker chiefs but substantive paramount chiefs.
The late Togbe Kwasi Adiko V, who died in 2015 and was buried in 2017, was found to have legitimately succeeded Togbe Kwami Ekpe Akoto II.
Following Togbe Kwasi Adiko V’s death, the Anyidoto clan, not the Kodivi clan, was deemed the appropriate lineage to present a candidate for the paramount stool under the rotational system.
Consequently, Roland Adiko’s nomination, selection, and enstoolment by the Kodivi clan were declared null and void.
The Anyidoto clan’s nomination and enstoolment of Togbe Etoi Kodzo as Paramount Chief were ruled lawful, with the Committee entering judgment in favour of the Petitioners.
The Petitioners were awarded costs of GH20,000.
The judgment brings clarity to the long-running chieftaincy dispute and is expected to reset the leadership landscape in line with established tradition and customary law.
However, Mr Roland Adiko and his kingmakers have filed a fresh appeal at the National House of Chiefs in Kumasi, claiming that the VRHC Judgment execution is no longer binding due to the appeal.
The Akotoviwo, through their legal team, argue that any claim of stay of execution is unlawful.
