Fisheries minister – local production key to food security

Minister Emelia Arthur emphasised boosting local food production as a key to Ghana’s long‑term food security during the 41st National Farmers’ Day celebration in Ho on Saturday.

She said the nation’s pursuit of food security must be anchored on strengthened local production systems, particularly in the fisheries and aquaculture sectors.

Arthur announced the launch of Ghana’s first inland fishing production project, aimed at increasing domestic fish supply as part of a broader effort to ensure abundant fish stock for national consumption.

She noted significant investments have been made to modernise the fisheries sector, including improvements in transportation, production infrastructure and technological capacity.

“These interventions will guarantee a steady supply of fish to meet the nutritional needs of every Ghanaian,” Arthur said.

The minister added that scientific management and targeted development programmes have enhanced both aquaculture and marine ecosystems, boosting yields.

Despite challenges, she expressed optimism that the ministry and its partners remain committed to achieving lasting results.

As the Member of Parliament for Shama, Arthur urged the public to support farmers and fishers, describing them as the backbone of the nation’s food‑supply chain.

This year’s ceremony honoured thirty‑one individuals and organisations for outstanding contributions to agriculture and fisheries.

The prestigious 2025 National Best Farmer award went to eighty‑two‑year‑old Opanin Abraham Kwaku Adusei, celebrated for decades of farming excellence.

The initiatives unveiled at Farmers’ Day signal the government’s focus on self‑reliance in food production, with expectations that increased fish availability will help curb imports and improve nutrition across Ghana.
