Bank of Ghana Governor, Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama, has emphasized the need for collective responsibility in achieving the desired Ghana, stating that government effort alone is insufficient.
Speaking at the 77th Annual New Year School and Conference at the University of Ghana on January 6, 2026, Dr. Asiama shifted focus from technical macroeconomic policy to a broader vision of national unity and collective sacrifice.
He argued that while the state provides the framework for stability, the ultimate success of the Republic depends on active participation from all citizens and institutions.
Dr. Asiama declared that development is achieved through sustained efforts, sound institutions, and collective responsibility. He noted that 2025 was about restoring confidence in the economy, and 2026 must be about leveraging that confidence for a more resilient, inclusive, and competitive economy.
The Governor highlighted the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme, which was introduced during a period of acute vulnerability to rescue the Cedi and replenish foreign exchange buffers.
He emphasized that the program’s long-term sustainability requires a broader base of support, sharing responsibility among institutions to ensure sustainability.
Dr. Asiama detailed 2025 refinements aimed at making the gold program more transparent and efficient, including the cancellation of G4O, risk management, and informed debate.
The Governor challenged participants to look beyond the state for solutions, leveraging the stability achieved in 2025 to build a competitive economy.
