The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) task force destroyed multiple illegal mining installations along the Ankobra River on 31 December 2025 in its year-end enforcement operation.
Security personnel raided galamsey sites at Gwira Banso in the Evalue Gwira District, targeting communities along the river banks where mining activities have caused severe environmental degradation.
Illegal miners abandoned their operations upon sighting the task force, fleeing into nearby vegetation as authorities moved in to destroy equipment valued at thousands of Ghana cedis.
Officials demolished dredging platforms, chanfang machines, water pumping systems, and fuel pipelines used for illegal mineral extraction in the strategic operation.
Five makeshift camps housing miners and serving as operational bases were completely burnt down during the dawn raid.
The Ankobra River remains under severe ecological threat despite previous interventions, with recent tests showing dangerous levels of mercury contamination from illegal mining activities.
NAIMOS officials maintain that persistent operations will continue into 2026 to protect Ghana’s water resources from further destruction by unauthorized mining activities.
