A massive crowd descended on the Joy FM car park on the final day of The Multimedia Group X’mas Egg Market, resulting in a near sell-out of thousands of crates of eggs.
The two-day market, a collaboration between The Multimedia Group Limited (MGL) and the Greater Accra Poultry Farmers Association (GAPFA), aimed to tackle the challenges faced by local poultry farmers due to an egg glut, while simultaneously offering affordable prices to consumers.
Felicia Antwi, a Veterinary Technician with GAPFA supporting KNS Farm, told Myjoyonline.com that the farm initially brought 1,700 crates, and by close of day, only approximately 150 crates remained. “Sales were particularly brisk this morning, with buyers coming in quickly to stock up,” she said, adding that overall sales were “massive” despite a slight slowdown in the afternoon.
Isaac Manful, Farm Manager for Fresh Yield, also reported significant demand, stating that over 300 crates of eggs had been sold by the end of the day. He noted consistent buyer interest, even during quieter periods.
Nana Kwadwo, a farm assistant at Akoko Foto, echoed this sentiment, saying that despite occasional lulls, customer turnout remained strong and sales were impressive.
Consumers at the market expressed their satisfaction with the initiative, describing it as a timely intervention considering the current rise in living costs as Christmas approaches. Many highlighted the quality of the eggs and reduced prices as key motivators for larger purchases.
The X’mas Egg Market provided crucial relief to poultry farmers who have been grappling with excess supply, falling prices, and increasing production costs in recent months. The large turnout demonstrates the value of collaborative efforts in supporting Ghana’s agricultural sector and alleviating financial pressure on consumers.
