A Communications Team member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Awal Mohammed, has asserted that the government’s case against Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, is collapsing due to a lack of evidence.
Appearing on Joy Prime’s Prime Insight, Mr. Mohammed stated that the proceedings so far indicate the state is unable to substantiate its claims against Chairman Wontumi and his company, Akonta Mining.
“If you’re following the case, you know the government is losing. The government itself has admitted in court they have no documentation to prove he authorized anyone to enter the concession,” he explained.
He clarified that the government initially accused Akonta Mining of authorizing individuals to illegally enter a forest reserve and engage in destructive practices impacting water bodies.
“They went to court alleging Chairman Wontumi’s Akonta Mining gave someone the go-ahead to enter a forest reserve and destroy our water sources,” Mr. Mohammed emphasized.
However, the tide turned, he said, when the court requested evidence to support these allegations. “They asked for disclosures, demanding to know if any documents existed proving Chairman Wontumi’s authorization.”
According to Mr. Mohammed, the government’s response was telling. “They stated they had no such documents. You could see from the case management that they simply have nothing,” he asserted.
He further described the charges as weak and driven by political motives. “It is just a trumped-up charge aimed at damaging his reputation,” Mr. Mohammed concluded.
