Felicity Nelson Spreads Christmas Cheer to Accra Police Cells

Local News

For 200 detainees in Accra, Christmas Day brought an unexpected gesture of kindness from Felicity Nelson, founder of the Felicity Nelson Foundation and a Deputy CEO (Operations) of the Ghana Tourism Development Company.

Ms. Nelson led a humanitarian initiative on Thursday, December 25, 2025, distributing hot meals, drinks, toiletries, and essential supplies to individuals held at the Railways, Baatsona, and Cantonment Police Stations.

The initiative stemmed from Ms. Nelson’s personal experience with unlawful arrest and detention. In 2024, she was held for 17 days following her participation in the ‘Fix the Country’ demonstrations – 14 days at Cantonment, one at Baatsona, and two at the Railways Police cells.

“Not all the inmates are guilty; they are just charged at the moment. None of them have been convicted of any crime. They are just as human as us and they also deserve to be loved and cared for and feel important. That’s why I decided to do this initiative,” Nelson told the media during the distribution.

The Felicity Nelson Foundation aims to provide essential support, promote dignity, and ensure basic welfare for detainees, conducting its activities with respect and transparency.

The ‘Humanitarian Support Initiative’ was designed to address the critical needs of individuals in custody, many of whom rely entirely on external support for food, water, and hygiene, particularly during the festive season. “For many detainees, Christmas will pass like any other day without family, food, or basic comforts. This initiative is about restoring dignity, sharing compassion, and ensuring that no one is forgotten during the festive season,” she explained.

This outreach marks a shift in Ms. Nelson’s activism, moving beyond protests towards community-centered and action-based work. She believes activism should not only challenge power but also directly address the needs of the people.

The initiative was funded by donations, and Ms. Nelson expressed gratitude to the Ghana Police Service for their cooperation in facilitating the Christmas Day distribution.
