The Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry has secured 40,000 acres of land from the Yeji Traditional Council to bolster the Feed the Industry programme, a key component of the broader Feed Ghana Initiative.
This significant land acquisition aims to stimulate large-scale cultivation, ensuring a consistent supply of local raw materials for Ghanaian industries and reducing the country’s dependence on imports.
Sector Minister, Elizabeth OfosuAdjare, revealed the details during a working visit to the Ministry by Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang. She stated that the government is actively partnering with private sector entities, including GB Foods, to successfully implement the initiative.
“Commercial cultivation of tomatoes, pepper, and ginger will commence shortly on 6,000 hectares of land,” the Minister disclosed. “GB Foods will begin cultivating approximately 6,000 hectares in September, specifically to supply our local industries. We are continuously in discussions with traditional leaders to secure additional land.”
According to Ms. OfosuAdjare, the 40,000 acres acquired from the Yeji Traditional Council is intended to attract investors seeking land free from litigation. “We want to assure investors that the land is secure and ready for agricultural development,” she added.
The Feed the Industry programme is projected to create numerous employment opportunities, provide vital support to Ghanaian farmers, and strengthen value chains within the nation’s agribusiness sector. The initiative is a strategic move towards industrializing agriculture and increasing domestic production, the Minister emphasized.
“This is about transforming how we source raw materials for our industries and driving sustainable economic growth through agro-industrial development,” Elizabeth OfosuAdjare explained.
