President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated the government’s dedication to bolstering Ghana’s export sector, promising enhanced support for local exporters to expand their operations and thrive in both regional and global markets.
Addressing the 33rd and 34th Presidential National Awards for Export Achievements, hosted by the Ghana Export Promotion Authority (GEPA) in Accra on Wednesday, December 17, President Mahama revealed ongoing discussions with the Ghana Exim Bank to broaden access to capital and credit for exporters.
This initiative, he explained, aims to empower businesses to capitalize on opportunities throughout Africa and beyond, ultimately strengthening their competitive edge. “We have exported raw materials for far too long; it is time to add value to our products,” the President stated, emphasizing the necessity of robust support systems to drive value addition and export-led growth.
President Mahama also encouraged greater participation from women and young entrepreneurs in the export sector, assuring them of sustained government efforts to foster a conducive business environment. He highlighted that investments in infrastructure, regulatory reforms, and institutional strengthening are pivotal to the government’s export development strategy, designed to enhance the global competitiveness of Ghanaian products.
The Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, lauded Ghanaian exporters for their resilience in the face of global supply chain disruptions, geopolitical tensions, and rising inflation. “Ghanaian exporters have demonstrated remarkable fortitude,” she noted.
She further advocated for closer collaboration between the government and the private sector to refine policies and tackle the challenges hindering the industry’s progress. “A united front is crucial for navigating these complex issues,” the Minister added.
B5 Plus Ltd was crowned Exporter of the Year for 2023/2024 at the ceremony. Other companies recognized for their exceptional performance included Interplast Ltd, Usibras Ghana Ltd, Olam Food Ingredients Ghana, The Bank Hospital, and World Shoe Ltd.
The Presidential National Awards for Export Achievements serve as a platform to celebrate excellence within the export sector and acknowledge the vital contribution of exporters to Ghana’s economic growth and job creation.
