Gun Attack Near Walewale Leaves Two Injured

Local News

Two passengers were injured after unknown gunmen attacked a passenger bus near Walewale in the North East Region on Tuesday evening.

The incident occurred while the bus was en route from Bolgatanga to Tamale. The injured individuals are currently receiving medical attention at the Walewale Hospital.

Ransford Enyan, the bus driver, told JoyNews that the vehicle initially had few passengers and was redirected by the VVIP terminal to pick up more in Tamale.

“The bus became full and we set off towards Tamale. When we got to the outskirts, I saw two tyres burning in the middle of the road, so I stopped. Suddenly, I heard gunshots. At first, I thought people were celebrating because of the Christmas festivities. But after another shot, one bullet entered the bus and hit a passenger in the head,” he recounted.

Mr. Enyan stated he immediately opened the doors, allowing passengers to escape to safety.

“I also ran through the bush and went straight to the police station to report the incident. It happened a few minutes after 6:00 p.m.,” he added.

The police have begun investigations into the attack, but the motive remains unknown as of now. Authorities are urging calm and assuring residents of increased security measures in the area.
