Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Bagbin, has reiterated Parliament’s dedication to transparency, accountability, and open governance, stressing the vital role the media plays in Ghana’s democratic progress.
Mr. Bagbin made these remarks at the Parliament Media Soiree and Recognition Night 2025, where he lauded the Parliamentary Press Corps for serving as a crucial link between the legislature and the citizenry.
“A free, professional, and independent media remains central to informed citizenship, public confidence, and effective democratic oversight,” he stated, according to a statement issued by David Sebastian Damoah, Director of Media Relations, Parliament, and copied to the Ghana News Agency on Tuesday.
The Speaker commended journalists for their commitment to accurate and ethical reporting, acknowledging the challenges posed by misinformation and the evolving demands of digital media.
The event served to honour outstanding contributions within the media landscape, highlighting the significance of effective storytelling in making complex legislative processes understandable to the public.
Awards were presented to recognise excellence, integrity, and innovation in parliamentary reporting, reinforcing the media’s watchdog function and amplifying diverse voices from across the country.
Among the award recipients were Kwaku Asante of Joy News, who received the Best Radio and TV Journalist award; Emmanuel Akorli of Peace FM, named Best Radio and TV Journalist (Twi); and Elsie Appiah-Osei of the Ghana News Agency, recognised as the Best Online Journalist.
Frank Bruce of Odikro Media was awarded Best Social Media Journalist, Paul Egbenya of CitiFM/Channel One took home the Best Television Camera Person award, and Racheal Quartey of Ghana Television was honoured for Public Service Broadcasting.
Special citations were also presented to the Speaker and the Clerk of Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, in recognition of their support for press freedom and their efforts to cultivate a collaborative environment with the press corps.
