The Ministry of Health is set to receive GH¢22.8 billion in the 2026 budget, a significant boost aimed at improving healthcare delivery and strengthening the nation’s health system.

Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh disclosed this, explaining that the funds will be allocated to crucial areas including upgrading existing health infrastructure, expanding the scope of the Free Primary Healthcare programme, and increasing financial support to the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

A key component of the budget, according to Mr. Akandoh, is the recruitment of additional healthcare professionals to address the growing demand for services. He further emphasized the government’s commitment to the welfare of health workers.

“We are placing a strong emphasis on the welfare of our healthcare workers, including improved salaries, allowances, and broader support systems,” Mr. Akandoh stated. “This is essential to motivate our staff and curb the concerning trend of professionals seeking opportunities abroad.”

The Minister reaffirmed the government’s dedication to ongoing dialogue with nurses and midwives, stressing that continuous engagement is vital for enhancing working conditions and maintaining high-quality healthcare standards nationwide.

Mr. Akandoh made these remarks in a speech delivered on his behalf at the 6th Annual National Dinner and Awards Night of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), held in Accra on Saturday, December 13, 2025. He lauded nurses and midwives as the backbone of Ghana’s healthcare system.

He announced the recent recruitment of 13,500 nurses and midwives to bolster frontline healthcare services and assured attendees that outstanding salary arrears for newly recruited staff will be cleared before the year’s end.

“This recruitment drive is in line with broader government initiatives like the Free Primary Healthcare policy and the Mahama Cares programme, all geared towards improving access to quality health services for all Ghanaians,” he explained.

Also present at the event, the Okyenhene, Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin, commended nurses and midwives for their unwavering dedication and compassion. He urged them to continue serving as pillars of national development.

“Government must invest in modern health facilities to position Ghana as a leading hub for healthcare services,” Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin stated. “Strong infrastructure is paramount and must be coupled with a committed and well-supported professional workforce.”
